What is Shareware?

Shareware is a method of software distribution and marketing, and not a type of program.

In fact, try-before-you-buy software has been discovered by traditional ‘shelf-ware’ companies, and now, nearly every large software company provides some type of free trial version of their software. Shareware, traditionally, is software that is published by authors, like me, who want you to help us with word-of-mouth advertising. It's more than a free trial; it's a free trial that you can share with your friends.

When you find a product that does what you need, you'll buy the full version, usually directly from the author. If you need product support, you'll often get a fast answer from a programmer who has worked on the product, not a help-desk worker reading from a pre-programmed script.

dot NET or not?

I am a polite fellow, and do not like to invade your computer with more than 100 megabytes of code unless it has a clear benefit for you.

As of today, .NET does not improve much for the end user. When counting the beans, it is only the developers who will gain from the .NET platform. Of course, not all developers will agree on this. They will advocate, with some good reason, that making it easy to produce a program will improve the quality of the product. Well, that might be true, but we are still talking about more than one hundred megabytes of third party code, which they have absolutely no control over.

Honestly, in order to be able to secure the quality of my products, I need to manage all the code under the hood of the program.
